Welcome to term one drama!

The team at Bazil Grumble are so excited to be starting the year with the amazing Peter Pan! We kicked off the term with auditions for the end of term performance, as well as working on the students’ breathing and projection: two skills that are essential for any budding actor!

The Bazil Grumble teachers encouraged students to think about their lungs and breathing, and how this will improve their ability to sustain projection. Many teachers noted that they were already seeing improvements in their classes:

“After learning how to properly use their breath and voice for performance, the students were encouraged to jump up in front of the class and say a line using their new found projection. Mackenzie has some stage fright and didn’t want to get up in front of the class. Mackenzie’s friend PK got up and they both demonstrated the line. Afterwards, I told Mackenzie that her projection was so good that I could actually hear her over PK and that she did exceptionally well. In the next activity she really came out of her shell and was offering up some great lines in her improvisation.
– Phoebe, Ironside Masterclass.

OLSH Peter Pan Term One 2016

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Superstars during week four classes

Despite the fun learning new skills and playing drama games, everyone was very excited to learn what role they were to play in the end of term performance:

“The students enjoyed the vocal projection and breathing exercises and were SO keen to see which roles they’d been selected for!” – Hayley, Windsor Superstars.

We are now busy exploring blocking and lines, and we have to commend our students on their outstanding focus:

“This week’s class was AMAZING. We did the run of the play first before the activities and they were so focused.” – Duncan, Holland Park Shining Stars.

“Rehearsal time! This week, we started blocking our play. The students really enjoyed this. Their energy was fantastic and they listened well.” – Jess, Toowong Superstars.

We are so excited to see all the students hard work as they continue adapting this beautiful and much loved tale into an entertaining and fun performance. We’ll be sending out the end of term performance dates soon, so do keep an eye on inboxes!

It’s Showtime! Here Comes The Polar Express!

As any drama enthusiast will tell you, there is a lot of time, effort and commitment that goes into creating a performance. There is forming the script, becoming comfortable with your fellow actors, learning lines, devising, blocking, polishing, costuming and finally performing in front of an audience. However, most importantly, drama is a great deal off fun where you meet new friends, develop skills and play drama games. Not to mention the excitement of performing in front of your friends and family!

Wilston

A Christmas tree, surrounded by presents in our Wilston Masterclass

Our teaching teams have been so proud of how our students have embraced their drama family and worked incredibly hard to create and perform the wonderful tale that is The Polar Express:

“We went through the show and it was great to see most of them not relying on scripts anymore. We went over a few parts a couple of times, but in general the show is looking fantastic. I am very pleased.” Lisa-Marie, Holland Park Masterclass.

“They all displayed a high level of focus, and their behaviour throughout the class was incredible.” Jess, Wilston Masterclass.

A big thank you must also go to our wonderfully supportive parents, who have assisted with the grand task that is line learning:

“The students not only knew their lines but also knew the cue line before it. I was very impressed with the work they have put in at home.” Jane, Wilston Shining Stars.

“The certificate today went to Amy for knowing all her lines (like most of the students) as she was super focused and knew her cues.” Zoe, Eagle Junction Shining Stars.

For anyone who may need a bit extra help, we have listed some handy hints on how to learn lines with an emphasis on fun. These tips will help ensure students do not need their script on stage (something we strongly encourage) and require minimal prompting on performance day!

  • Remind students to speak slowly and clearly, and use lots of expression in their voice and on their face. Remind them to lift their chin and hold their shoulders back so they look confident.
  • Say the line before their line (this is their cue line) and ensure that they know that their line is next. This is one of the most difficult aspects of drama.
  • Ask your child to think about the type of voice their character would use. Record your child saying their lines on your phone or other recording device. Play it back. Ask them to try again using a different type of voice. Also, you can experiment by holding the device further from them so that they have to speak up for their voice to be heard.
  • Act out the scenes with your child. Let them hear you use character voices, laugh together and have fun with the script! ‘Playing’ with our children creates wonderful memories. They grow up so fast and start to lose their love of play so make the most of these opportunities to laugh and learn together.
  • Ask them to say their lines in front of the mirror so that they can see their facial expressions. Most children love looking at themselves and so they love this task!

We all have such a love of drama and performing, and we are very much looking forward to sharing this with all the family and friends attending our end of term performances!  If you’re still unsure of when your child’s performance is being held, please click here to view all of the important dates!

On the countdown to term four performances!

The students are hard at work rehearsing for the end of term performance of The Polar Express! Classes have been polishing blocking and learning lines, and it has been great to see some of the older students helping the younger students:

The show is coming along well. The prep students find it a little hard to remember blocking… [and] the older two students are very helpful in this regard. Teraneah has been a blessing to this class.” Lisa-Marie, Jamboree Heights Superstars.

As we come to the end of week six of drama classes it is amazing to see students supporting each other, particularly as some students start to feel nervous with upcoming dress rehearsals. Many teachers have been commenting how students have been great role models and it shows how drama aims to improve group interaction skills:

The winner of my certificate was Serena. She received this award because of her incredible ability to show expression through her face and through her projection. During the first run through she was definitely a shining star; becoming an incredible role model for all the younger students. I am going to be very sad when she moves up to the Masterclass next year.” Zoe, Eagle Junction Shining Stars.

Alanna and Charlotte from our St John’s Anglican College Superstars class

This week we also talked about confidence in classes. Though confidence is such a personal thing, there are certain things that confident people tend to do. Some examples include:

  • When performing, standing up straight and tall;
  • Speaking in a loud and clear voice;
  • Making eye contact with the audience.

Confidence is developed over time but comes more quickly if you are surrounded by people that encourage you with positive words and who provide constructive feedback on how to improve your skills. We will continue to focus on confidence during dress rehearsals (most of which start next week!); however, if the students continue to offer assistance, accept compliments, be optimistic and work well as a group we feel we everyone will have a great performance!

The end of term performances are just around the corner, so don’t forget to double-check your child’s performance date and provide your RSVP by clicking here if you haven’t already done so. We’re looking forward to seeing you all soon!

All aboard The Polar Express for term four!

Welcome to term four drama! A wonderful time of year where the hint of Christmas is well and truly in the air. Bazil Grumble students have been treated to a wonderful start to the term as they begin to explore the tale of The Polar Express with great enthusiasm. Week one of classes saw the allocation of parts for our end of term performance, while also starting to explore drama techniques and playing Bazil Grumble classics such as Cleaner of the Museum and a very festive version of the Shape Game!

Students at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Darra as Santa’s sleigh

Our teaching team has seen fantastic levels of energy from the students, and have been particularly impressed with their ideas for the performances. The students have also been incredibly encouraging to each other as they learn what it means to be part of a cast. We’ve been impressed with the wonderful effort that we’ve seen in the past two weeks!

SJAC

Students at St John’s Anglican College, Forest Lake as Santa’s sleigh

As we begin term four drama classes, the teachers and assistants at Bazil Grumble are able to reflect on how far the students have progressed this year. Perhaps our teacher at Ironside Shining Stars summed it up best when he said:

“The students have really developed in terms of their creativity from when I first met them back in term one as an assistant. This came through in the activities used to explore the story of ‘The Polar Express’, with most of the students giving it a red hot crack and responding really well.” – Duncan

We are looking forward to a wonderful term as we adapt the beautiful language of the well loved book The Polar Express. To all of our students both new and returning – ALL ABOARD!

It’s the Bazil Grumble Festive Season!

Abbie's in the BG Festive Spirit despite the storm at Jamboree Heights State School!

Abbie’s in the BG Festive Spirit despite the storm at Jamboree Heights State School!

Wow, this term sure has flown by quickly!

It seems like just yesterday that our drama classes were preparing for their Lights, Camera, Action! Showcase, but alas the term has taken a more festive turn and we are already enjoying performances of A Christmas Carol and Twas the Night Before Christmas.

Students have been working very hard the past eight weeks. They have had lessons focusing on vocal projection, characterisation and confidence all whilst rehearsing AND having fun at the same time. Every class has had the opportunity to learn elements of drama, play drama games and rehearse their show at least once every lesson.  I’ve even heard of up to two to three rehearsals in one afternoon, even when a severe storm brew outside (shout-out to last Thursdays classes at Coorparoo State School, Brookfield State School, Indooroopilly State School and Jamboree Heights State School)!

We teachers would not be surprised if our students sleep well after an afternoon at drama, as we definitely do! But no sleep just yet;  we’re too excited for all of our dress rehearsals and performances this week.

–          Alycia 😀
